University Projects

Here is a list of a few assignments i have undertaken while at University:

Sydney Town Hall – George Street, Sydney

This assignment was called ‘Rethinking Sydney’s Town Hall. We were instructed to consider the way people interact & reflect with a ‘Town Hall’ and incorporate a public building which accomodated both public space & private space.

My concept was fluidity & porosity, using a continuious folding floor plate which bends & wraps around to create a space.

Eco Trekking Lodge – Berowra (Great North Walk)

Illoura, meaning Pleasant Place in aboriginal has been designed to accommodate walkers along the Great North Walk. The site located deep in the valley of the Galston Gorge National Park located on the Great North Walk, which is 250kms long, linking Sydney City with the Hunter Valley and Newcastle. The site itself is on the Benowie Track, which is a 25km section of the Great North Walk.

Built in the hilltop of a large slope with panoramic views of the mangrove river and the surrounding mountainous regions, Illouria Lodge climbs the accent of the leafy environment branching out to accommodate visitors in a way of relaxation. The Geometry of the lodge allows sun and shadows to ‘chase still time’, and the cooling breezes from the South to be captured and muted throughout the day.

Turramurra Memorial Picnic Shelter

Creating a space by pulling away elements and creating a structure that would serve both as structural and surface.

That I came up with the concept of ‘Jenga’, which is a game that aims to challenge a structure to its minimum by pulling away elements to the point where it still stands with the least number of pieces. As I looked into this structure I noticed as I pulled away pieces it created spaces. These spaces were inhabitable on a human scale.

From there I created a concept model, which connected the structure, skin and furniture. The furniture arrangement is not the traditional formalised table and chairs, I have used the structure to create seating and tables.

This to the benefit of the persons occupying the shelter creates an interactive environment, allowing them to choose and inhabit the space in a way that they please.

The idea then was to use a method, which is similar to that of a log cabin, which is, stacking yet modernise it and incorporate the initial concept with that. I chose to use 200×200 square lengths of treated fire defensive timber, which would be used for the entire shelter, with a tinted translucent polycarbonate roof shelter.

The rhythmic patterns and chaotic ferocity of nature is a source of inspiration to me. Searching into the natures wild, untamed forces you will be faced with the parallel of sublime, representing the life force where endless imagery can be harnessed. A landscape is an idealised version of nature seen through a filter of culture. Whether it is imposing order upon the landscape, or extrapolating order from it, the patterns that emerge as part of this natural and cultural system represent a convergence of chaos and order

In landscape the gesture of the viewer is not that of distance, as art is, but where the viewer becomes a participant, performing within and becoming part of the constructed landscape.

To many, the word memorial resonates those personal feelings of loss and emotion where a representative figure of a memorial is used for reflection and remembrance. Forms which consist of simplicity, journey and restraint, using methods of pillars, plinths and water. The traditional idea of a memorial is to attempt to convey a feeling of horror that is being commemorated, where the viewer is reminded of a certain past time or loss, being that generally of death.
